The Schtick
Avalon Bakery is a distinctive, charming shop located in the Midtown neighborhood in downtown Detroit. The biting, fair trade coffee is served with a side of heavy cream and hipster-vibe. The inside seating area is approximately the size of a postage stamp (Millennial generation: go Wikipedia “stamp”), so expect to take these delectable baked goods to go, or dine outside. No shortage of parking, vegan and gluten-free options, and original flavors.
Do's & Don'ts
Do explore the area. Cass Corridor is an up-and-coming locale for cutesy boutiques… emphasis on the “up-and-coming” as it still needs a lot of work. Shoe shopping down the street at Sole Sisters pairs excellently with a chocolate-chip sea salt cookie… or three. Don’t brush the vegan recipes off as wannabe normal food. Try the vegan apple bar.
Best for Your Buck
Pick up a loaf of bread and bring it home to create your own sandwich, instead of ordering off the menu. You must try the scallion dill loaf.
Get Your Jew On
Pick up some merchandise on the way out. If all those years in organized, Jewish youth groups taught us anything, it’s that no experience really happened unless you have an ironic t-shirt to wear the day after.
