Iiiiiit’s ad time! The one time of the year we all sit around and pay attention to the things we tried so hard to avoid, we invented TiVo. (Calm down, I said TiVo, not Tebow.) Ugh, you horrible things that pay to keep my favorite shows on the air, whyyyy can’t I fast forward through you OnDemand? Enough with the preamble. It seemed that the theme of this year was “America.” America is coming back, America has spirit, get ready because America’s going back to the good old days – the days of prosperity and the thriving economy and, you know, tuberculosis. Whatever. This is football! Beer! Apple Pie! Even the Budweiser commercials depicted America’s release from Prohibition! The game took place in Indiana, the crossroads of America! However, If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a hundred times: stick to babies and dogs. Regardless of how cinematic you get, babies and dogs will always win. So, here are the best ads. I watched them all, so you didn’t have to! Even though you already did. Because we all did.
- Imported From Detroit: Hey there, Eminem is pretty cool. He doesn’t surface often, either, so when you see him, you know it’s a big deal. Last year’s Imported From Detroit ad from Chrysler pretty much set the bar for cool, so the fact that this year’s was even cooler is pretty awesome. Because you know who’s even cooler than Eminem? Clint Eastwood. He’s cooler than everyone. It’s a law. I’m surprised you didn’t already know that. It cannot be contested. I don’t recommend trying that out, or he’ll shoot you dead.
- The Reinvented Toyota Camry: They didn’t just reinvent the Camry, they also reinvented couches, babies, and rain (which now makes you skinny). Sweet.
- Hulu‘s “Hulu Plus” ad was super quotable and really funny. Thumbs up for Will Arnett.
- Sketcher’s got it right with a hilarious doggy named Mr. Quiggly.
- The Acura commercial was pretty funny. Soup Nazi!
- The Best Buy commercial was really awesome, and I laughed at the Words With Friends bit.
- Honda made a commercial with Ferris Bueller!
- I like the Samsung commercials, because they speak to me. Because I totally waited in line for an iPhone, and whoever wrote them has impeccable comedic timing. Also, the “I Believe In a Thing Called Love” guy is even more relevant now with his crazy hipster stache.
- I’m including this year’s Star Wars themed Volkswagen commercial, because the dog was cute and the force choke afterwards was funny, but we all know last year’s little Darth wins all the awards. The dogs barking out a symphony of the Imperial March was pretty great too.
- The E*trade baby is back, and his baby buddy is speed dating.
- Budweiser’s “Eternal Optimism” gets a spot because I like the dancing.
- Thumbs up for babies. Chase gets it.
- Century 21, mostly because i want a plate of cookies with Deion Sanders’s face on them.
- With so many hilarious “Crash the Super Bowl” finalists, I was disappointed with the winner – It was just ok. However, the sling babyone was absolutely hilarious.
To those involving Betty White, vampires, Zombies, and/or anything at all relating to GoDaddy: enough, please. I am super over you.
What about you guys? What was your favorite? If you disagree with any of my choices, you’ve got 48 other options to choose from. Go nuts!
